Sutphen and IDEX Fire & Safety Deliver Simplified Pump Operations

INDIANAPOLIS – Sutphen will unveil an apparatus built on its extreme-duty Monarch chassis featuring IDEX Fire & Safety’s new SAM™ Control System, at the FDIC International conference and exhibition April 8-13 in Indianapolis.

The innovative SAM system makes complex pump operations simple by managing water flow, so the operator can focus on the fireground and the safety of their crew, not the side of the truck. SAM is an integrated total water flow control system that manages the truck’s pump, tank, intakes and discharges.

“Sutphen enjoyed partnering with IDEX Fire & Safety on this new technology. Sutphen has always been and continues to be a leader in innovation and design within the fire industry,” said Sutphen Director of Sales and Marketing Zach Rudy. “With Sutphen as one of the first manufacturers to show the SAM Control System, we continue to establish ourselves as a leader. We also realize the safety and scene management improvements this brings to our customers and know this will help keep our first responders safe.”

The truck is destined for the Pattonville Fire Protection District in Bridgeton, Missouri. The district operates from their headquarters/training facility and three engine houses. It covers 30 square miles, including a heavy concentration of commercial structures and the most highway miles in the state.

“Safety is the number one priority for us. We need our engineers to be able to operate in a safe location while keeping an eye on the crew,” said Pattonville Fire Protect District Battalion Chief Steve Rogger. “The SAM system simplifies pump operations for us, so we worry less about managing manual valves.  Now, the operator can provide another set of hands on scene.  Using the wireless tablet controller, we also gain some additional work space freedom around the perimeter of the truck.”

With SAM, pump operators can use saved presets to set discharge pressures with just one swipe on a 10-inch display. Even before charging lines, the system automatically opens the tank-to-pump valve as soon as it is in pump gear, so water is in the pump and ready to go.

Sutphen was a good match for Pattonville to build this apparatus because they both shared a desire to be forward thinking and take advantage of cutting-edge equipment. Not only does this vehicle feature Sutphen’s clean cab technology in the fight for cancer prevention, it now also

boasts the latest in advanced pump controls. The truck was produced at Sutphen’s facility in Dublin, Ohio.

Brad Cashion, owner of Cashion Fire Equipment, an authorized sales and service dealer for Sutphen in eastern Missouri, was instrumental in helping their vision become a reality.

“Our dealership was excited to help Pattonville realize their vision of a Sutphen fire apparatus with an IDEX Fire & Safety SAM System,” said Cashion. “Working with Pattonville was a pleasure, and I look forward to seeing this vehicle in service. I am just as excited as the Pattonville crew.”

After FDIC International, Pattonville Fire Protection District will take delivery in early May.
